It's summer vacation and you're thinking about sun, water and meeting friends, which is by all means the very summery thing to do. However, before you know it vacation is going to come to an end and you'll have to go back to school. Returning to high school or college is not as bad, as you know other students and the teachers, so you know exactly what to expect. But when you go to new school for the very first time, the first day of classes can be extremely stressful, so you should prepare well for it to go as smoothly as possible.
You have plenty of time to read up about your new school and teachers, so you should take the opportunity to do so. The more you know about the general atmosphere and types of students you will encounter, the better you'll be able to fit in with your appearance and attitude. Standing out and being an individual is important, but it's just easier if you've got some common ground with others. As for getting to know a thing or two about the teachers, once you have the information about their way of running classes and their approach, you'll know what to expect from the very beginning, so you won't be as stressed out when they start discussing their program.
When the day comes to head to classes, make sure you have everything you might need in your bag. Your schedule is the number one thing you should pack, and a campus map would be helpful too. Of course you know to pack a notebook and some pens, but consider taking your laptop and mini mouse as well since you may want to make "hard" notes right away. Other than your academic supplies, you should think about taking care of the time between classes, and pack an iPod or a book just in case.
For those just in case situations you should also take lunch with you. First of all you don't know the cafeteria abilities yet, and second, if you have special requirements due to diet or illness, like diabetes, it's better to have some fruit and vegetables or a low in sugar sandwich on diabetes certified pita bread than realize that you have little or no choice as far as lunch goes. Having a small bag of mixed nuts may also be a good idea to keep you going between classes when you won't have the time to sit down and eat a proper meal.
Being prepared physically is one thing, and being ready for new school mentally is another. Don't think about not knowing anybody or having problems finding your way around campus, but rather about the great opportunities you have in front of you. You'll get to meet all these people in your classes, in the library, in the cafeteria, just as long as you smile and say hi. Not all of them will be easy to talk to or even willing to chat with you, but you can be assured that if you'll be willing to approach others, you'll find friends that will be there for you long after you al graduate.
