They say a picture is worth a thousand words. Today, I want to share some of our research data to travel, especially regarding the equipment we are taking, so I decided to share some photos as well.
I have done much research leading up on this trip and I needed a place to record it all. I use the appropriate application called 37Signals' Backpack for organize info.
At first I would have imagined a much smaller backpack that I actually do. I'm 5'8 "and 170 pounds. In the store it feels right to go with something like 4000 cubic inches. Once I started adding up accessories, clothing camping gear and I realized I have much more space. I ended going with navy Kelty Red Cloud 5600 with a 5600 cu. in capacity.
I made the right decision; filled bag is comfortable, weight about 40 pounds and fits all the stuff I need to get with a tiny bit of room to spare:
Shoes - Must be versatile
When it came to shoes I knew it had to meet all the following four criteria:-light weight, comfortable, water proof (or at least water resistant), and with style. I was surprised how hard it was to find a shoe that matches all that. At the end of the day I went with a pair of Merrell Intercept.
Another thing to remember is that we will do very little with the shoes so we do everything to bring the shoe should be Versatile enough to match a variety of different outfits.
I try Vibram rubber sandals Fivefinger and even more comfortable, they are not as practical as I had imagined. Vibram also require weekly brushing to prevent them from smelling the weird.
Daypacks - Comfort is Key
These are generally small backpacks that you can keep with you on day trips while you leave your backpack at the hotel / campground key. I have tried several different ones including slings. Make sure the tent is sealed and impervious from water. You will definitely want to get a trace. A trace is a layer of plastic that goes under the tent, is water and easy to clean. Some tents will come with one, as ours has.
If you decide to go with a small tent, sure that there is space to store your backpack while you are inside the tent. About two person tents are created by small vestibules extended rain-fly. You can generally fit in a smallish back under the porch (this will not be perfect).
